Azerbaijan: Training for investigative journalists

AzerPhoto, Baku, 17 Feb 2009 – On February 14-15 Investigative Journalists Network (IJN) organized training for investigative journalists with support of Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation. The purposes of the training were to deepen the knowledge of the investigative journalists in the field of public finance, to provide journalists with detailed information on transparency of these issues and to draw more journalists into investigative work on these interesting issues.

The training involved not only the members of IJN but also about 25 additional investigative journalists from other Mass Media like “Azadlıq”, “Bizim yol”, ”Gundelik Azerbaijan” ,”Ayna-Zerkalo” etc.

On the first day of training expert and member of National Budget Group ( NBG) Mr. Inqilab Akhmedov delivered a lecture on the topic “Impacts of crisis year on budget and social expenses”. This lecture was followed by the speech of another economist and NBG member MR.Zohrab Ismailov on the topic “ Budget information : budget classification and budget stages. How to understand budget”.

The second day was followed by the lectures of MBG memebr Mr. Rovshan Agayev, lawyer Mr.Alesker Mammadli and EITI coalition coordinator Mr.Azer Mehtiyev on the topics of “Transparency and monitoring of budget expences : education ,health and social budget expences”, “ Right on access to information” and “ Oil revenues: Budget-Oil Fund – State Oil Company relations”.

The next round of the training is planned for the upcoming weeks.
