Uzbek population continues to rise

Uznews, Tashkent, 09 Nov 2008 – All regions of Uzbekistan but Fergana and Khorezm Regions increased the birth rate in the first nine months of 2008, according to the Uzbek State Statistics Committee.

Uzbekistan’s permanent population stood at 27.4 million people on 1 October and grew by 355,500, or 1.3%, since the beginning of the year.

High growth rates were posted in rural areas: 270,700 of 379,000 babies were born in rural areas (71.4%).

The birth rate grew in Andijan Region (from 22.4 to 25.2 births per 1,000 people), Kashkadarya Region (from 23.2 to 24.9), Namangan Region (from 23 to 24.7), Samarkand Region (23.9 to 25.5) and Surhandarya Region (from 23.7 to 25.5). The lowest birth rate was in the capital – 19.2 per 1,000 people.

At the same time, the birth rate did not change in Fergana and Khorezm Regions while the death rate remained high and was lower only than in Tashkent where it stood at 0.81% (0.79% a year ago).

The deaths were mainly because of cardiovascular diseases (59.5%), lung diseases (6.4%) and accidents (6.35). A total of 6,100 infants under one died in January-September (6,200 a year ago).

Statisticians recorded 172,900 marriages and 12,100 divorces in this period (166,300 and 12,100 a year ago respectively).
