Kindergartens to teach Islam in Grozny

Grozny, CASCFEN, Oct 29, 2012 – Starting from November, 2012 in the capital of Chechnya, Grozny pre-school educational institutions will teach the children the basics of Islam.

“If our children from their early age will begin to study the religion, then they will grow up as highly moral citizens. Earlier, each family firstly taught their children Islam. And the fact that now the basics of Islam will be taught not only at schools, but also at kindergartens, can be only welcomed. It is a religious and a good cause”, said the representative of the Muftiyat (Spiritual Authority) of Chechnya.

Chechen children

Starting from October 20, selection of teachers is being conducted among the female students of the Russian Islamic University (RIU). The first competition was attended by about 40 young women. The examination board will determine the top candidates to be sent to work in kindergartens. There, they will teach children how to commit prayer and other religious ceremonies and to read the Quran.

People express different attitude to the introduction of teaching the basics of Islam in Chechen kindergartens and schools. “I am glad that in kindergarten, my son will be taught how to properly commit praying, reading the Quran and so on. When he grows up a bit, he will need that. I myself would like to learn how to read the Quran, since it is the duty of every Muslim believer”, says Kheda Madayeva, a local resident.

“It’s one thing to teach children the alphabet, the Chechen and Russian languages, and quite another thing to teach them the basics of religion. I believe that we should not mix secular and religious education, especially in pre-school institutions. I am afraid that in this case, the children will not normally learn both spheres”, believes Ismail T., a resident of Grozny.
