Azerbaijan to launch new multilingual TV channel

IRFS, Baku, 03 Mar 2009 – A new multi-lingual TV channel will open in Azerbaijan. This was told to APA by the Chairman of the National Television and Radio Council Nushiravan Maharramli. The new television will be named “Azerbaijan International”. Programs and news will be broadcast in English, Russian, Persian, Turkish, and Armenian languages.

Noting that NTRC will conduct a meeting in connection with the new television, N. Maharramli stated that the frequency for the TV to be broadcast on has not been identified yet.

Maharramli emphasized that the channel will not be financed by the government. The company to win the tender will decide on the amount of time to be allocated to each language.

IRFS contacted NTRC Deputy Chairman Togrul Mammadov to receive information about the new TV. However, he said he was unaware of the issue since he was on vacation. Despite our repeated calls, N.Maharramli did not answer our phone calls.
