Georgia: Editor-Publisher of ’24 Saati’ Paata Veshapidze Considers Distribution of Newspapers Impossible to Limit

InterpressNews, Tbilisi, 13 Feb 2009 – Editor-publisher of ’24 Saati’ Paata Veshapidze considers that it is impossible to limit distribution of newspapers. As InterpressNews was informed by Veshapidze, he knows that new types of booths are planned to be delivered, though it is not known who and how will distribute the papers. Veshapidze stated that he has seen such booths of Paris type produced in the factory of a friend.

He says that ’24 Saati’ has its own scheme of distributing newspapers. ‘Our scheme is based on system of distributing papers spread in East Europe, where distribution companies show fact of selling papers in the booths in online regime. Owners of the newspaper can see amount of papers sold in different booths to analyze sold circulation’, – Veshapidze stated adding that this scheme would be much more transparent’.
New booths of papers appeared in the city a while ago.

Leader of ‘Christian Democrats’ Giorgi Targamdze spoke about threats facing printing media after the report delivered by president in parliament yesterday. Targamadze stated that leading paper editors addressed him about the plans of the government.

Targamadze offered president to respond to the issue and express his position. Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili didn’t respond to the issue regarding distribution of papers. He stated that ‘he will be happy if Georgia media will be more competent, free and responsible’.
