Uzbek president’s dissident nephew still locked up

Uznews, Samarkand, 21 Oct 2008 – Samarkand’s psychiatric hospital is continuing the forced treatment and confinement of Jamshid Karimov, an independent journalist and President Islam Karimov’s nephew, a hospital source said.

Information about his release turned out to be fake.

The source told Uznews.net today that Jamshid Karimov, 41, was still in hospital and there were no signs of his release.

“Jamshid is in hospital. We do not know when he will be discharged,” the source said.

Other pieces of information about the release of human rights activists Dilmurod Muhitdinov and Mamarajab Nazarov were confirmed.

Jamshid’s relatives living in Jizak are isolated from him, and his mother died in March 2008 without seeing his release.

Jamshid’s forced treatment is an example of crimes the Islam Karimov regime has been committing in Uzbekistan in recent years. Despite being the presidential nephew, he has been undergoing forced treatment since September 2006 for carrying critical material about the local authorities in Jizak Region.
