Kyrgyzstan: Editor-in-chief arrested in Bishkek

24.kg, Bishkek, 10 Sep 2008 – The Alibi newspaper editor-in-chief Babyrbek Jeenbekov got arrested in Bishkek after he lost the lawsuit against Kyrgyz president’s relatives and couldn’t pay off an imposed fine. Soon after he opened another newspaper – Open Politics, the Russian website svobodanews.ru reported.

Russian news media informs that “the Open Politics independent newspaper editor-in-chief got arrested in Bishkek,” referring to the Kyrgyz radio sources.

“The reason of his arrest, most likely, is a never paid fine imposed on another newspaper closed for libel on the president’s relatives. Jeenbekov and local human rights activist called these accusations politically motivated.”
