IRFS/IFEX, Baku, 15 Dec 2008 – On 12 December 2008, “Yeni Musavat” columnist Zamin Haji was allegedly beaten by the chairman of the Karabakh Liberation Organisation (KLO), Akif Nagi.
Zamin Haji told IRFS that he called Akif Nagi “eke” (the word for brother in Uzbek) in his article, which displeased Akif Nagi. “Akif demanded that I stop writing about him,” said Zamin Haji.
“I told him that I will write about him as long as he is engaged in public activities, at which point Akif Nagi hit me in the face with his fist. My glasses broke as a result of the blow.”
Zamin Haji said that he has filed a complaint about the incident with Unit 5 of the Binagadi Police Department.
According to information IRFS received from the police, documents in connection with the complaint have already been gathered and sent to the Binagadi District Prosecutor’s Office.
IRFS was unable to learn what stage the case is at in the Prosecutor’s Office. IRFS was also unable to obtain a statement from Akif Nagi about the case.
First, Akif Nagi said he was at the police unit and could not take a phone call. Later, a different person picked up his phone and said that Akif Nagi was praying. Later, when IRFS tried to contact Akif Nagi on his cell phone, it was turned off.
