Georgia: Journalist Shalva Ramishvili to be released on Parole

Media.ge, Tbilisi, 31 Oct 2008 – On November 23 on the basis of a large-scale amnesty jrounalist Shalva Ramisvhili will be released out of prison. Gia Tortladze, head of the Anti-Crisis Council of Parliament declared at the press conference on this matter and added that along with Ramishvili the council demanded release of 20 famous people; he didn’t reveal their identities.

The question of amnesty has been raised by the Anti-Crisis Council for over a month now and Minister of Interior Affairs Vano Merabisvhli publicized the decision yesterday. Today Gia Tortladze clarified that three thousand prisoners will be released on November 23. The amnesty will affect those on probation.

On the whole the amnesty will affect inmates convicted under 60 articles, including children and women. Inmates tried for petty crimes will be released, including those convicted for financial crime, drug use, etc.

Shalva Ramishvili who was arrested on August 27, 2005 for the extortion of money. The court sentenced him to a four-year-imprisonment. Ramishvili is serving his third year at #2 Rustavi common prison. The prisoner does not plea guilty. The journalist addressed the Constant Commission of the Penitentiary Department in summer 2008 with an appeal for early release. The commission rejected his appeal.
