Georgian Dasi Criticizes Public Broadcaster

Media.ge, Tbilisi, 24 Oct 2008 – On October 23 Georgian Dasi political fraction criticized Public Broadcaster and demanded the broadcaster to invite the party members to the pre-election political debates.

Georgian Dasi takes part in the November 3 elections of Adjara’s Supreme Council. The political organization has also named MP candidate in the district of Didube where the election will be held on November 3 as well.

Television debates on Public Broadcaster are held in the Day’s Comment talk show. As Natia Mikiashvili, MP candidate for the district of Didube declared at the press conference on October 23 none of the leaders of the Georgian Dasi has been invited to the talk-show.

“I was the only exception – public broadcaster invited me to the talk show the day I was named as the MP nominee”, – said Mikiashvili.

She also expressed her concern over the fact that national TV channels didn’t cover the Press Freedom Index 2008 released by the Reporters Without Borders; in the press freedom ranking Georgia has sharply fallen.

Leader of Georgian Dasi, MP Jondi Baghaturia states that under the law political parties running in the election shall be invited to political TV-debates but he hasn’t yet been invited by the Public Broadcaster to participate in the debates.

Public Broadcaster covered as well as commented Mikiashvili’s announcement in the news programme Moambe.

“Public Broadcaster allocates equal time in Day’s Comment to all electoral subjects running in interim elections. Natia Mikiashvili, member of the Georgian Dasi and majoritarian MP candidate already took part in the programme Day’s Comment. We allocated our airtime to her on October 7. Besides, news programs of the Public Broadcaster regularly cover pre-election campaigns of all election stakeholders”, – declared Public Broadcaster.
