UzA, Tashkent, 20 Sep 2008 – Seminar on “The role of media in the process of democratic transition” was held in Tashkent. It was organized by the Public fund for support and development of independent print media and news agencies of Uzbekistan, the Institute for civil society studies and the office of the US Institute for new democracies.
The forum was attended by heads of leading newspapers and magazines, online publications and non-state TV channels, professors and students of journalism faculties, as well as representatives of public organizations.
Director of the Institute for civil society studies M.Usmanov, director of independent print media and news agencies support fund J.Khakimov and others noted that far-reaching reforms implemented in the country were aimed at creating conditions for independent activities of the media, in particular, in protecting the people’s interests.
In this regard, the role of the mass media in impartial and accurate informing the public about the essence of democratic changes taking place in the country and spiritual renewal of society is increasing.
Ensuring media freedom and independence, strengthening the technical base, improving the skills and qualifications of journalists create wide opportunities for strengthening the democratic foundations of the society, the participants said.
Reports on moral and ethical aspects of journalism, training and retraining media professionals, as well as improving the national press on the basis of international standards were presented at the forum.
