An Open Letter to Georgian Parliament

Media.ge, Tbilisi, 19 Jul 2008 – On July 15, 2007 the Parliament of Georgia, unlike the parliament of previous convocation, held the hearing of the Public Defender’s report of 2007 and dedicated several hours to its discussion.

The report was prepared on the basis of Georgian citizens’ complaints and vividly depicts critical situation in the sphere of human rights. The report represents systematization and a deep analysis of infringements upon fundamental rights and freedoms.

After the hearing the parliament assessed the Public Defender’s report as a notice only, which means that infringements stated in the report weren’t studied, infringers will not be held responsible and the infringed rights will not be reestablished.

As we realize the importance of human rights protection for democratic development, we are concerned about Georgian Parliament’s cynical attitude toward democracy.

We positively evaluate the work done by the Public Defender; we support and endorse his recommendations stated in the report of 2007.
