Azerbaijan IPI National Committee to Run Selection Process
Vienna, IPI, 07.03.2011 – The International Press Institute (IPI) today announced that it is accepting nominations for this year’s IPI Free Media Pioneer award.
The IPI Free Media Pioneer award was established in 1996 to honour media organizations that have fought to ensure freer and more independent media in their country.
This year’s winner will be honoured in a special ceremony during the IPI World Congress, which this year will be held from 24-27 September in Taipei, Taiwan.
IPI is pleased to announce that its Azerbaijan National Committee will manage the selection of the 2011 IPI Free Media Pioneer. The selection committee will be chaired by Azer Hasret, Chairman of CASCFEN (Central Asian & Southern Caucasian Freedom of Expression Network), which won the award itself in 2004.
Previous winners have ranged from press freedom organizations to publications, radio stations and news agencies. These include Radio Okapi (2010), Novaya Gazeta (2009), Talking Points Memo (2008), Mizzima News Agency (2007), Yemen Times (2006), SW Radio Africa (2005), CASCFEN (2004), the Media Council of Tanzania (2003), Danas (2002), Malaysiakini.com (2001), Press and Society Institute (2000), Ethiopian Free Press Journalists Association (1999), Radio B-92 (1998), Alliance of Independent Journalists (1997) and NTV (1996).
All nominations should be submitted via email to IPI.Pioneer@gmail.com by 31 March 2011.
Submissions should include:
* The name of the media organization
* A brief description of the media organization, and how their work has contributed to press freedom and access to information
* Contact information for the media organization
The winner will be announced after a final selection is made in early June 2011.
